Where the Moisture Comes From
A household of four puts somewhere around eight litres of water into the air every day just by breathing, showering, cooking and drying washing indoors. In a modern, well sealed house that moisture has nowhere to go.
Northland humidity makes it worse. When warm, wet indoor air meets a cold window or an exterior wall it condenses, and once surfaces stay damp, mould follows. Wiping the windows every morning treats the symptom and nothing else.

How Positive Pressure Ventilation Works
A positive pressure system draws air from the roof space, filters it, and pushes it gently into the house through ceiling diffusers. That slight positive pressure forces damp indoor air out through the gaps in the building rather than letting it sit and condense.
Roof space air is usually drier than the air inside the house, and on a sunny day it is warmer too, so a well set up system contributes a bit of free heat as well as drying the place out.
SmartVent Systems
We install SmartVent, which is why it sits on our vans alongside Daikin and Toshiba. Options run from a single room unit up to a whole house system with multiple diffusers, filtration, and heat transfer from the room that has the heat pump in it.
Filters need replacing periodically. We will tell you how often for your particular set up rather than leaving you to work it out when the airflow drops off.
Ventilation and Heating Work Together
Dry air is cheaper to heat than damp air, and it feels warmer at the same temperature. A house that has been dried out properly reaches a comfortable temperature faster and holds it for less, so ventilation and a heat pump make each other work better.
Independent guidance on condensation and indoor air quality makes the same point - dealing with the moisture is usually the first move, not the last.
Installation in an Existing Home
Most installations are done in a day. The unit goes into the roof space, ducting runs out to each diffuser, and the diffusers are cut into the ceiling in the rooms that need them. We work out the diffuser positions with you first, because the right positions do far more for the result than an extra outlet in the wrong place.
If your roof space is tight, unlined or unusually shallow we will tell you at the assessment rather than discovering it half way through the job.
Home Ventilation Questions
What Northland homeowners ask us about ventilation, condensation and damp.
It removes the conditions mould needs, which stops it coming back. Existing mould still has to be cleaned off the surfaces. Once the house is holding less moisture those surfaces stay dry and it does not return.
A correctly sized system running at normal speed is quiet enough that most people stop noticing it within a week. Noise complaints usually come from an undersized unit having to run hard, or ducting pulled tight around a bend. Both are avoidable at installation.
The fan is the only thing drawing power and it is a small load, comparable to a few light bulbs. In most houses the reduction in heating cost from drier air offsets a good part of it.
Opening windows does work, but only while they are open, and in a Northland winter that means letting your heating straight out. It also does nothing overnight, which is when most condensation forms. A ventilation system works continuously without dumping the heat you have paid for.
Yes. Bathroom and kitchen extraction dealing with moisture at the source is a sensible partner to whole house ventilation, and we can supply, install and wire both.
